As the last new moon reached the end of its cycle, I post these readings as a prompt for contemplative practice and noticing the more cosmic patterns of life as you attend to the lunar energy in a solar world.

August New Moon – Tuesday, August 2 at 4:44pm ET in the USA

Releasing the last water moon & Welcoming the new fire moon – Amidst the first days of the Celtic season of Lammas which brings a time of harvest and the first hints of tipping back toward the dark half of the year.

Surrender to the Depths Reading

gaian four-waterAugust days are full of beauty at height of summer season but there often also begins a strange undercurrent of emotion coming from somewhere. Perhaps it is a message from our soul selves.

The soul isn’t easily defined so metaphor is the way to discover meaning. Our souls are like the late summer pond. The murky mystery of our depths makes the beauty that we show in the sun. So in this season, it makes sense to tend both.

Before doing this reading, you may want to imagine yourself as the woman in the Gaian Four of Water and spend some time looking inwardly to see what your emotions are.  You might visualize a pond or well and imagine traveling down from surface to depth and seeing emotions at different levels. Don’t worry about understanding them all. Just open yourself to them.

SOUL MESSAGE:
What message is coming from your soul through your deep emotions?

SURRENDER: How to surrender to this message?

REVELATION: What will be revealed when you do?

I am going to be tending my soul depths on vacation during the first two weeks of August! I am only doing readings for those who have signed up for the full lunar year before I leave. But if you do want this reading and can wait until after August 16th, you can order this as an e-reading for $22. Here is a sample of how I do these readings in a collaborative intuitive format.

The image that “unconditional love” conjures is a trap.

Unconditional love implies perfection, perhaps a perpetual state of ecstatic connection. It’s the domain of the Divine. But we are human; we are imperfect. Our loves are not constant in their expression. But this is what makes them dynamic, keeps them alive. And, yes, I will tell you: Love does not die. Love survives – thrives -by changing.

Instead of a static image of love, we might be better served to take the moon as our guide. Here I have been gifted by the wisdom of Joanna Powell Colbert that she generously shares with stories from her life and has encoded into the Gaian Tarot’s Moon card:

gaian 18-moon

“Each month the moon embodies the cycle of descent and return, as it waxes to fullness, wanes to darkness, and begins to wax again. The Moon is constantly changing, and She is utterly faithful in Her changes.”

The moon teaches us about renewing love.

First, there is the new seed of love planted when the moon is re-born in darkness. This is where we spark the vision: we dream of the new lover; we imagine the baby born, or, if this a love that has been through many cycles, a surprise, a forgiveness, an unexpected laugh opens a new door in an old relationship.

Then the light grows from crescent to quarter and beyond so you can see more clearly. Both beauty and challenge are revealed. Your love is made real and the person that contains this energy is exciting in their revelation of self. Of course, now you have to move from your internal vision into relating to another person. This requires adjustment, both to your vision and the reality of how you are together.

The full moon comes. The light is bliss inducing. Challenges and demands of the everyday can wait while you just let love flow.

The dark begins to stir, then grows stronger, but it is not your enemy. It is true that here is where you have to give love away. You may turn from the cocoon of a relationship’s support to bring love to projects or others in need. A new relationship may be revealing rough edges so you turn to a friend for comfort. The silence of your teenager at the dinner table is hard but then you start talking to other moms about being a parent. And all of this is love disseminating. As it goes out into the world, love ripples and increases. Love flows like water as the moon dissolves.

Then the few nights before the new moon are dark. The love relationship dies. I believe it was James Wells who recounted hearing the Jungian analyst Marion Woodman says that her 50 year marriage lasted so long because it died 4 times. Perhaps there is a rift or a fight or a difference has to be acknowledged and laid down in the dark for healing. Something new will have to emerge in the next cycle for the relationship to continue to be the container for love. Perhaps this relationship no longer serves and stepping away from it will allow love to enter in a different way. Perhaps there is physical death.

None of this ends Love. Because there is a flow of Love beyond our individual selves and it can carry you into a new cycle when the time is right. You may have to wait in the dark longer than you expected, but Love waits with you. Here a relationship as it was is surrendered. Or you startle yourself by forgiving or being forgiven. You didn’t know you could be held so beautifully when that wave of love comes toward you after your beloved dies. Or boundaries dissolve and you suddenly feel the love of your ancestors flow like energy through your body. In this, you are awakened to Love in a new way.

gaian 20-awakening

Because the flow of Love and each of our individual loves dance jubilant in light and renew themselves always in the dark.

Each week I pull Tarot cards to inspire practice that cultivates soul wisdom for readers of the blog as a group using the Gaian Tarot.  (If you want to read more about the process, check out Sacred Practices of the Gaian Tarot: The 3 P’s).You are invited to use the cards below to inspire your practice, and, if you like, share your reflections in the comments.  You are also free to draw your own cards and share them in the comments.

Gaian ace-waterPATH:  Use Pile 1 / Majors and Aces to pull a card for the question:  What path would it best serve us to walk this week? ACE OF WATER  invites us to walk this week on pathways of  …

  • Emotions and intuition.
  • Floating in the balance of birthing action (the red) and flowing stillness (the blue).
  • The beginnings of a wisdom that comes from embracing both descent and return, light and dark.
  • Cultivating liquid flow as we go through our days.

gaian eight-firePRACTICE:  Use Pile 2 / numbered cards for this question:  What practice(s) will best serve us to move along this path this week?  EIGHT OF FIRE  invites us to practices such as …

  • Engaging in a practice that you’ve already discovered works well for raising your energy (maybe it’s breath of fire or casting a circle and building a cone of energy or activating your chakras).
  • Throwing yourself enthusiastically into a creativity practice. Photography might be most aligned with the Eight of Fire’s energy; you capture light in an instant and then post it to Flicker or Facebook and it rapidly zooms around the world!
  • Going out to look at and be in awe of the night sky.
  • Let yourself brainstorm a wild and crazy list of creative projects and then pick one and take the first steps toward making it real.

Gaian explorer-earthPOSTURE:  Use Pile 3 / People cards for a question such as:  What attitudes and behaviors will be most helpful to undertake this practice and walk with path?  EXPLORER OF EARTH  invites you to follow your path and practices with attitudes of …

  • Commitment and intensity
  • Knowing that there are gifts in the wild places waiting for you
  • Grounding yourself fully in the earth so you can listen for what is below the surface or coming from Spirit realm.

OVERALL MUSINGS: Message from the depths and from the heights may come to you this week. To receive them, make sure you are grounded, but in a flexible and flowing way. Connecting to and attuning to the energy that comes from what is happening in the natural world around you will help. If there is storm, let its power teach you. If there is calm, enjoy the pause. If the leaves rustle above you before fluttering down, let yourself hear a message come from the realms beyond that time of year (here in the Northern Hemisphere anyway) comes closer and invites us to enter the edge of its mystery.

[Note: If you would like to be an Explorer of Earth, there is one more week left to sign up for Wisdom of the Seasons: Dark Love’s Dawning Mini-Retreat on October 31st here in Easthampton, MA.]

gaian 18-moonPATH:  Use Pile 1 / Majors and Aces to pull a card for the question:  What path would it best serve us to walk this week? THE MOON  invites us to walk this week on pathways of  …

  • Honoring natural cycles, particularly those which the moon shows us of dark to new, from waxing to full, from waning to back again to dark.  (MoonCircles is a favorite site of mine for moon cycle information).
  • Remembering that one stage of life always succeeds another, and that a time of darkness is always followed by renewal” (quoted from Joanna Powell Colbert’s Gaian Tarot companion book).
  • Tuning into the realms beyond through dreams, connecting with the ancestors, letting the natural world be your guide, or recognizing psychic messages.

gaian six-earthPRACTICE:  Use Pile 2 / numbered cards for this question:  What practice(s) will best serve us to move along this path this week?  SIX OF EARTH  invites us to practices such as …

  • Graciously giving your gifts to others and humbly receiving what they give back to you in return.
  • Paying attention to how your shopping habits impact the earth. You might think here of the eco-guidance of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (which I did develop into a spread for personal sustainability).
  • Gratitude for the abundance of food that comes from the earth, which might express itself as saying a prayer over your food. Here is a favorite for mine from Thich Nhat Hahn:  “In this food I feel the presence of the whole universe supporting me.”

  • Pausing to pay attention to quieter and smaller messages that may offer great gifts.

OVERALL MUSINGS: The receptive, feminine Moon and active, masculine Sun is the celestial couple that captures our attention most dramatically. They stand next to each other on The Fool’s Journey. The moon and the earth, both most often perceived as feminine entities, are a couple, too, but in a different way. More like mirrors each to the other, they stand in closer proximity, form a little community. They are more like friends. They moon circles the earth, teases her tides, brings a gift of cyclical change that offers each 28 days, the hope of renewal. The earth – and her creatures – admire the moon’s special light. Respond to the invitations of her changes. This week you might contemplate this special relationship and tune to the subtle call of the moon into the earthly reality of your life. What is being offered? How will you respond? How can you be grateful for what springs from this fruitful friendship of moon and earth?

If you are interested in exploring how the moon and the dark might show their love of earth and you, join me on October 31st here in the Pioneer Valley for a Wisdom of the Seasons Retreat on Dark Love’s Dawning

  • Waltzing with the wild side of yourself

gaian six-firePRACTICE:  Use Pile 2 / numbered cards for this question:  What practice(s) will best serve us to move along this path this week?  SIX OF FIRE  invites us to practices such as …

  • Celebrate a success, mark a loss, or attune to the shifting season by gathering with friends outdoors to engage your senses, commune with fire, make music, and/or dance.
  • Just dance – with others is ideal but you can do it alone in your kitchen.
  • Tune into your body to listen to its messages and taking pleasure in its movements.

  • Paying attention to what is emerging in your life.
  • Regarding all with an attitude of gratitude.
  • Steady work/action with attention to the details.

OVERALL MUSINGS: In this week of equal day and night, engage your tender power and turn it inward. If the shift of seasons and the stars has opened up a vein of pain, do not banish its messages. Dare to listen with an open heart. This can help the flow. Of if this time of autumn’s new born beauty awakens your joy, reveal in its glory. Don’t hold back, share this gift with others.  No matter which gifts arrive for you this week – either of the light or dark, or their intermingling – your soul says, yes, you have the strength to receive them.

[Note: If you are a writer and want to direct some tender power toward a writing project that you are in the middle of, I do have a slot in this weekend’s Oracular Write-A-Torium open.]

gaian 3-gardenerPATH:  Use Pile 1 / Majors and Aces to pull a card for the question:  What path would it best serve us to walk this week? THE GARDNER invites us to walk this week on pathways of  …

  • Alignment with the energy and offerings of the land around you so you can tap into the abundance of any season.
  • Being aware of and celebrating the body – your body and the body of the Earth.
  • Finding the right balance of work and rest to bring forth abundance, creativity, new life, or harvest.

gaian 8-airPRACTICE:  Use Pile 2 / numbered cards for this question:  What practice(s) will best serve us to move along this path this week? EIGHT OF AIR  invites us to practices such as …

  • Sit with friends and tell stories. Allow both the stories of joy and success to be told alongside the stories of grief and loss.
  • Gather a circle for a specific purpose and use the circle guidelines offered by Christian Baldwin in her Peer Circle process.
  • Listening internally to all the different voices and ideas that surface from within you.  Yes, it sometimes feels like there is a raucous committee meeting going on inside our heads! But you can align this group for forward movement or internal peace by letting each have its say.  You might give names to each of these different aspects of yourself and then listen in turn to what each of them would say in regard to an important matter before you.
  • Joining a support group specific to the need or change that you are going through.

gaian explorer-firePOSTURE:  Use Pile 3 / People cards for a question such as:  What attitudes and behaviors will be most helpful to undertake this practice and walk with path?  EXPLORER OF FIRE invites you to follow your path and practices with attitudes of …

  • Flexibility and embracing the flow.
  • Openness to whatever comes. It’s not really that you are fearless; it’s that you feel the fear but harness that energy to do what you want.
  • Stepping into your passion fully.
  • Acting on instinct developed from long practice.

OVERALL MUSINGS: We are entering the time of the equinox when day and night are of equal length. In the Northern Hemisphere, we are shifting and grounding the fire cultivated in summer’s height while in the Southern Hemisphere, the dreams of winter make their first movement toward form. Out of each will emerge a harvest most fully made and appreciated through both hard, active work and a pausing – like composting – that allows the growth to be fully received and integrated. In summer’s light we can forget that that pause, but the shortening days here in New England when flowers surrender their seeds to earth remind me that rest too is part of the process of creation.

Gaian 11-justicePATH:  Use Pile 1 / Majors and Aces to pull a card for the question:  What path would it best serve us to walk this week? JUSTICE  invites us to walk this week on pathways of  …

  • Awareness of the interconnection of all things.
  • Consideration of the impact of our actions.
  • A heart made light because you know you have considered the Whole, the Earth, your community and are living in a right balance between their needs and your own.
  • Balancing and giving equal weight to your heart and your mind as you make important decisions.

gaian four-firePRACTICE:  Use Pile 2 / numbered cards for this question:  What practice(s) will best serve us to move along this path this week? FOUR OF FIRE   invites us to practices such as …

  • Create the circle depicted in the image with Tarot cards as I have in this Four of Fire ritual.
  • Creating a circle of protection, inspiration, healing, or power and standing within it to truly receive these gifts. Use ritual objects that evoke the qualities that you are seeking such as candles for power, water for healing, feathers for inspiration, or rocks for protection.
  • Communing with the moon when it is full to open to its special qualities of light.
  • Keep a night vigil to honor or bring light to personal or societal darkness.
  • Acknowledging and communing with those people and things that ground and support us.

gaian elder-waterPOSTURE:  Use Pile 3 / People cards for a question such as:  What attitudes and behaviors will be most helpful to undertake this practice and walk with path?  ELDER OF WATER  invites you to follow your path and practices with attitudes of …

  • Trusting the flow of life.
  • Allowing ourselves to pause and pay attention to what is arriving in our lives – especially our emotions – at any given time.
  • Seeing with awe the things that you have seen a thousand times before.
  • Being attentive to the magic and beauty that comes from the outer natural world (especially the ocean as it follows the moon) and/or the inner world of dreams.
  • Friendship with and compassion for all the emotions that well up in you and in others as you travel your days.

OVERALL MUSINGS:  Feather, fire, and flow mix in the heart this week. How will the heart receive these offerings of mind, passion, emotion? This seems an unruly combination, but the heart aligned with Justice’s awareness of the interconnection of all can hold them and mix them in its chambers. And at the end of the week, with careful tending, something more powerful than each of these elements alone can emerge.  Which of your projects, relationships, explorations would most benefit from such balancing this week?

  • Active imagination writing in which you let “characters” that emerge from your imagination, your dreams, or the Tarot talk on the page and your respond to them.
  • Engage in a meditation where you tune into your heart, imagine what is pressing upon it or piercing it, feel the pain of it, imagine this pain as light, and then let the light flow through you.

  • Writing in any of many forms that allow for the expression of emotion: for example, journaling, writing poetry, writing a letter to another person to express your true feelings (you may or may not want to send the letter).

Gaian guardian-waterPOSTURE:  Use Pile 3 / People cards for a question such as:  What attitudes and behaviors will be most helpful to undertake this practice and walk with path?  GUARDIAN OF WATER  invites you to follow your path and practices with attitudes of …

  • Being in the flow of life; “no forcing, no holding back” (a phrase from the poet Rilke).
  • Embracing mystery and all that life offers, from its fullness to its messiness.
  • Holding intense emotions – your own or of others – with love and letting them flow where they may.

OVERALL MUSINGS:  This week you can be a transformer, a light bringer, one illuminates the soul-self even when it feels lost in the dark. But first you must let any distress, darkness, or despair flow out of you and be met, not with fear or distain, but love and compassion. Then that which on the surface is difficult will be revealed as your pathway to magic. May it be so!

And if the way you bring light into the world is through writing and you have a project you want to take to the next level with some intuitive support, do check out the Oracular Write-A-Torium: A Harvest Open Space Retreat that will be held here in Easthampton, MA September 25-27. There are just 3 spots left.

  • Meeting the shadow (, i.e. the parts of ourselves that we reject and don’t want to acknowledge) as a first step toward integrating it more fully into your understanding of yourself.
  • Acknowledging where you are stuck and then holding that place with compassion.
  • Attending to the places inside you that feel dark or heavy. You can offer them attention, perhaps listening for the wisdom being offered from here, before you try to fix them.

twoofairPRACTICE:  Use Pile 2 / numbered cards for this question:  What practice(s) will best serve us to move along this path this week?  TWO OF AIR  invites us to practices such as …

  • A meditation that supports you to let your focus shift from your ever day demands so that you can listen at a deeper/higher level.
  • Wearing something blue with the intention of activating your third eye/indigo chakra that allows us to see beyond everyday happenings and stimulates our intuition
  • Taking moments of pause (perhaps just 2 minutes) throughout the day to remind yourself to listen … to the birds…to the world around you … to your inner voice or intuition  … to Spirit/The Greater Than … to what might be below the words that someone speaks or their actions.

Gaian elder-firePOSTURE:  Use Pile 3 / People cards for a question such as:  What attitudes and behaviors will be most helpful to undertake this practice and walk with path?  ELDER OF FIRE  invites you to follow your path and practices with attitudes of …

  • Intensity.
  • A desire to serve the whole with your own unique power to heal.
  • Being open to signs and messages that come from the Otherworld of Spirit, of energy, of beyond the human.
  • Dedicating your practice to healing, to honoring the ancestors, to something greater than the usual everyday concerns.
  • Knowing you can move between the worlds of the mysterious and the mundane, the living and the dead, the material and the spiritual.

OVERALL MUSINGS: The combination of Bindweed’s invitation to meet our shadow and the Elder of Fire as a guide for working with the ancestors has me pondering how not all the challenge/shadow in our lives springs from our individual experience. We are a part of lineages and our inheritance can include the unhealed, unacknowledged traumas our ancestors experienced as victims and perpetrators. We often carry these burdens unconsciously into our own lives.  But when we bring conscious attention to these shadows, individual and collective healing is possible. This shadow dance can take various forms, from the tangible and public to the personal and energetic. The Tracing Center, for example, was founded by descendants of 19th century slave traders to educated about the extend of involvement in the slave trade by New Englanders. (A member of this family wrote an open letter to Ben Affleck about his wanting to hide such an ancestral connection.) Our dance can also be meditative as suggested by the Two of Air.  Enter into an imaginal state where you invite your ancestors to tell you what needs healing and respond by sending compassionate energy. Perhaps ask if there is action you might take in the outer world to be a marker of healing in physical form.  (The Judgement meditation in my series of guided visualizations inspired by the Major Arcana leads the listener through such a process of listening to the paternal and maternal lines for gifts and what in need of healing. Just e-mail me (carolyn @ my site’s name) if you would like to engage in this work and I’ll send you a link to access it as a gift of support for those willing to dance with the shadow!)

Are we truly moving toward our highest dreams? Does the work shine with love? Dare to look and see!
